A Day of Fasting and Abstinence
As we approach Ash Wednesday a few people haveasked what the church teaches about this today. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are both days of Fasting and Abstinence.
Fasting is for all aged 18 and older who have not celebrated their 59th birthday. One full meal is allowed and two light meals to maintain strength according to need, which together should not equal one full meal. Liquids, including milk and juices are allowed between meals. Parents should ensure that even those who are too young to be bound by the law of fasting and abstinence are trained ‘to have a true appreciation of penance’.
Abstinence is observed by all aged 14 and older when no meat is allowed. Yet when health and ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not apply.
